STOPTRUMPDUMPZELDIN

I got involved with the local grassroots organization Let's Visit Lee Zeldin out on the north fork of Long Island's east end. After Trump's election, a wave of activists began to form all over the country in a resistance movement to stop Trump. Let's Visit Lee Zeldin is just one  FACEBOOK group formed as a way to channel the energy of constituents of New York's 1st Congressional District and to defeat the incumbent Republican Lee Zeldin, in the 2018 midterm elections. Zeldin's seat is one of 33 Republican held seats that possible "flips" whereas weakening the Republican majority and weakening Trump. I believe most Americans are in agreement on a number of issues. I don't see things in terms of big R or big D.

02.06.17 Residents of New York's 1st Congressional District confront a spokesperson for Congressman Lee Zeldin(R) at his Riverhead office and demand answers after cancelling a previously scheduled meeting.

02.27.17 Representatives of PROJECT FREE KNOWLEDGE meet with Congressman Lee Zeldin at his Riverhead offices as his constituents demand a Town Hall meeting. So far Zeldin has refused and promises to hold a phone conference instead. Frustrated voters tell us what they would love to tell the Congressman...

02.28.17 Instagram   Congressman Lee Zeldin(R NY CD01) still refuses to hold a Town Hall opting for 1on1 meetings. Is he shy or sly??

03.02.17 Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin refuses to host a real town hall opting for one-on-one meetings with constituents first. Watch how good he is at ducking out!

"I keep working until I got a room where I could see both ways... so I could see clear across the water."

ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM AROUND HERE?

No, I’m from Virginia, the hills of Virginia,  way up in the hills.  So far up, you couldn’t get no further.  I came from the top of the mountain, down.  My people lived there. We were raised there, all of our lives.   And I was the first one ever to leave and come out.  They thought I was crazy...

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO LEAVE?

I just wanted to see that part of the world I read about in the paper.   And I didn’t see why not.  It was calm and people didn’t bother each other much.

 DID YOU COME BY YOURSELF

Yes, and you know, back then, you weren't supposed to marry somebody out of another group. But me,  I always say,  go with who you love,  not with what they tell ya.

DID YOU KNOW ANYBODY down here then?

Nope, didn’t know anybody.  Somewhere around here was an old home,  and this woman,  she rented rooms.  She gave me a room and I could see westward but not the other.  I keep working until I got a room where I could see both ways... so I could see clear across the water.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

Let me see what was it?  I worked in a soda shop, I guess you would call it, making sandwiches, and making soup every morning. Being on a stove for the first time we made a big pot of soup.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN CHANGE OVER THE YEARS ?

The people. It used to be real calm people, everybody loved each other.  Now they don’t give a damn whether you go or come.

People just don’t respect each other,  or look at you,  or even speak half the time. You know that. I don’t have to tell ya...

South Carolina

Exploring the state of South Carolina the week before the 2016 Democratic Primary.  I started in Charleston the night Donald Trump won the Republican primary then headed to Greenville to attend a Bernie Sanders rally the next day. The rest of the week I bounced around the state recording impressions. Its a poor state, the gas prices are low, the roads need work and I ate way too many biscuits.
